As a fan of Gatchaman!, Voltron, Tekkaman Blade, and Robotech I had an absolute blast with this game. As a matter of fact, when I watched the trailer for it, I had to double check online to make sure this wasn't an adaptation of a more obscure series. The creators get mad points for that. So, at its core, Vulkaiser is a horizontal bullet hell shooter. Coolio. In keeping with its theme of retro anime mecha, your core mech is equipped with a standard, but weak, vulcan cannon. A charge meter at the bottom of the screen constantly fills up as you shoot: activating it fires off a more powerful shot. In addition to your core mech there are four other parts to the Vulkaiser that you can combine with during each stage, each with its own unique weapon. A cluster of missiles, a close-range drill, a weak but screen-filling spread shot, and a wide electric attack. The idea of mixing and matching your mech on the fly reminds me of an older NES shooter, Mag Max, although Vulkaiser is more fleshed out. With all of its various mech parts and special weapon gauges, is Vulkaiser worth playing? Yes. I was able to beat the game in my first attempt without dying. I came close by the end, and two of my partners had to bail a la Starfox, but it was doable. But what's cool are the multiple levels of diffculty. Too easy your first playthrough? Crank it up a level. I can see myself coming back to this in the future to try out the harder diffuculties. Is Vulkaiser the best shooter I've ever played? No. But it's certainly fun and what it lacks in depth in makes up for in style. Totally worth a buy if you're a fan of the genre or of classic mecha anime. Rick Hunter would be proud.. Living here in Jersey Tokyo, Fighting villains from afar,You gotta find first gear in your giant robot car!You dig giant robots!I dig giant robots! We dig giant robots!CHICKS! DIG! GIANT ROBOTS!DA NA NAAAAAAAAAAAAANice.. An extremely short (6 stage) but fun filled romp. There's little to no story. I guess you can keep using the same one of four units over and over for each stage JUST to see what they say, but other than that the story is super simple and 70's esque. Its a fun nostalgia fest.As for the gameplay, it was challenging. If you are new to shmups, easy will feel like "hard mode".It involves using 4 unique power ups: drill, thunder, rocket, and needle. Each one with their own strengths, weaknesses, uber moves, and "mini uber", which is activated by letting go of the fire button when the "charge" is filled up. The way the shooting has a charge meter adds a nice rhythm to the shooting, with each unique charge filling up once every 3 seconds or so. Its a nice unique way to add a small gameplay dimension to the shooting instead of the usual "hold down fire and aim the ship".Is this game a masterpiece? Heavens no. Is this game worth the price, ESPECIALLY on sale? Definately.. The drill is the best.. Astro Port is always surprising us with simple but adictive games. Vulkaiser is not an exception. A lovely homage to the 80's anime of giant robots, with that esthetic emuled by the design, graphics and music. This game promises good hours shooting ships over the cities, avoiding bullet hells, fusing robots and discovering super powers on partys with only one lifebar. Like a classic arcade. Enjoy it!. WOW! This not only captures classic 70's tatsunoko anime style aesthetics, but it NAILS all the core elements of a great shooter. Good music, great visual style, fun enemies and dialogue, and your power ups are you combining with other ships to turn into new super robot forms with new attacks!Hold shot to release your spread shot, and let go of shot once fully charged to do your stronger attack for that form. If you aren't combined with any other ships you fire rocket fists. Tons of bullets, real challenge and fun. Only complaint is that until you knock a few of the achievements out of the way they are huge, linger and cover the screen on the right which makes it tough. Still those are one time only nuisances per achievement so I could care less. Great shmup! Reminds me of a mix between Raiden and honestly Gunbird!. what an awesome and nostalgia-filled shoot 'em up/bullet hell game. the game is full of character from the art style to the great soundtrack, i spent many years of my childhood watching anime series like (Grendizer and such). even my nickname on Steam is based on a character from Grendizer series. gameplay wise, the game plays great and the easy difficulty would suit new comers very well and even medium is good. the harder ones are for the vets of course and they are lots of fun too. you start with your robot and you have the normal attack and there is a charged attack that takes a few seconds to charge and there is the omega bomb wich is usable only 1 time per stage. also there are ships that you can merge with to get an extra weapon like rockets or thunder and they are really helpful. i loved every second of this game and i would highly recommend to anyone interested in old animes like Grendizer and such or any one interested in bullet-hell games <3.. Funny litle shmup game thats clearly inspired 70s giant robot anime shows.Game itself is realy well simply made .Gameplay mechanic is very tight (darius, thunder foce comes to mind)Very talented developersIts very short game. (like 15 min) but game will whoop your♥♥♥♥♥even on normalsimply fun to play.cons - Pause button ingame doesnt exist .No options/resoultion/graphic settings (thats not that big deal since game uses low res 2d graphics and very simple controls). True stories of 1977.
